Silk City Diners like Betty's Diner in Marcy were made by the Paterson Vehicle Company, Paterson, NJ, between 1927-1964. Exteriors typically used a combination of stainless steel and porcelin in many different color schemes and often displayed the diner's name on a large horizontal porcelin stripe.
Dave Riker enjoys serving breakfast to customers any time of day. A popular item is "Slop" or you can get "Slop Supreme!" Betty's Diner is located on River Road in Marcy and is open ever day for breakfast lunch and dinner, Sundays for breakfast and lunch. They offer 2 eggs, toast and coffee for 99 cents!
Empire School of Dance teaches children as young as 18 months through adults. You can learn tap, tumbling, ballet and even hip-hop!
There is a fascinating book by Marcy Historian, Ray Ball, that covers the early day of aviation in Oneida COunty, including the Utica Municipal Airport that was located on Old River Road in Marcy. It is now the site of the Marcy Distribution Center.
There is a small monument marking the site of the original Utica Airport. Ray's book about the airport is available at the Marcy Town Hall.
M&M Cleaners
Since 1950, M&M Drycleaners has been located on Rutger Street. Named for owners, Mary and Mike Meola, the 2 boys running around the shop in the early 60s are now running the business together. Warren and Gary Meola remember those days
fondly and the great teacher they had in their father.
Gary Meola owns M&M Cleaners with his brother, Warren.
11-year-old Rachel from Clinton shows us one of her amazing tumbling routines at Empire Center of Dance.
Charline Topor, owner and instructor, teachers students of all ages at Empire Center of Dance located at 9659 River Rd., Marcy, 735-4774

Trick of the Trade
Photographing birds. Gary suggests attaching branches or old fence posts on or near your feeder. When birds come to feed, they will land on these items and your pictures will look more "natural"
I didn't know that the original Utica Airport was in Marcy. I borrowed Ray Ball's 300-page book, Flying to Marcy, Early Aviation History of Oneida County, NY and was fascinated with the stories and pictures. The book is available at the Marcy Town Hall and local bookstores and I've seen it available online, too.

We're looking forward to learning more Marcy and will be featuring the town of Deerfield as well. You can get a sneak preview of our next show during WKTV's Saturday morning news.
