Welcome to Remsen City! We learn about the early Welsh settlers who settled Penn Mt. and the Remsen area. We see red griffins everywhere -the Welsh symbol of strength in the face of adversity. When faced with a lack of jobs for future generations the Remsen Development Corporation has some big dreams. The plans start with the Remsen Train Depot with future plans to include a community of Welsh artisans and craftspeople and other local handmade wares.
Next week we return Remsen and travel further north to Forestport.

Remsen City
When the Welsh immigrants settled in Remsen, NY in the 18th and 19th centuries, they wrote home to their families in Wales telling them of beautiful Remsen City. In Remsen they found opportunity and religious freedom.
Remsen Train Depot
In December, 1855, the Black River & Utica Railroad opened its tracks from Utica to Boonville, NY. The original Remsen Train Depot burned in the late 1890s. Its replacement served as many as 40 passenger trains a day. Notable passengers, many with private cars, included the Webbs, Rockefellers,
Whitneys, Roosevelts, and Vanderbilts, en route to their Adirondack "great camps". Many other tourists came to Remsen to board trains, sustaining a flourishing local hotel and restaurant trade. At one time, the Remsen yard contained 9 tracks.
Today, you can board the Adirondack Scenic Railroad in Utica and stop at the historically accurate replica of the Remsen Depot.
May we suggest this summer, pack a picnic, take the train to Remsen, stroll a couple blocks south through the historic village and picnic at the park on the shores of the creek near the waterfalls.
The Vision for the Future
Ty Gwaith Crefft yn Remsen - "The House of Craftsmanship in Remsen"
Ty Gwaith Crefft yn Remsen will celebrate, interpret and promote Remsen's proud and self-sufficient Welsh heritage and cultural origins. The neighborhood will be built with the character of a railroad
oriented, mixed use neighborhood in upstate
New York in the early twentieth century and
will interpret the history of Remsen and the
legacy of Welsh immigration to the village and
the area.

Didymus Thomas Library
Didymus is greek for 'twin' and Thomas means 'twin' in Aramaic. Richard found this interesting as many Welsh familes had similar first and last names, like William Williams. Many family members had
the same name as well, this makes following your
family geneology especially difficult. You can
research your lineage at the library or join the Snow
Country Quilters Guild
or the BB Gun Club. The
library has a BB gun shooting range in the basement!
