Event Spotlights with Kari
This week we started our tour of "FIM country" (Frankfort, Ilion, and Mohawk.) We discoved that Frankfort was a big industrial center of the Mohawk Valley in the mid 1800s and early 1900s. That spirit is still strong in the village and we met many industrious people, including Juanita Bass and her Soul Classics spices and sauces at Melrose Supermarket. We look forward to visiting Granny's Kitchen and we'd like to see what Brown's Feed is about, too.
Thanks for watching, Sharry and Lance Whitney

As you travel along Rt.5S, you are traveling the route of the canal and railroad -the original superhighways connecting Utica and Frankfort. Franfort was a center of industry in the mid 1800s and home to nearly a quarter of The Valley's population at that time.
With temperatures reaching near 60 in January, Richard suggests a winter picnic. Here, at the Franfort Marina, the Erie Canal and Mohawk River meet. Frankfort has one of only three natural harbors on the Erie Canal.
Franfort's early manufacturing included gun powder and whiskey, but most people remember if for matches and balloons. The Balloon Farm B&B is located in the 30-room mansion built by the son of William Gates, who made a fortune in wooden match business. The mansion was later purchased by Carl Myers who was in the balloon business.
You can read about the Balloon Farm in a children's book called The Big Balloon Race. Mary Myers, know as "Carlotta the Lady Aeronaut," would perform balloon ascensions at fairs.
