Wow, after visiting Canastota, you'll start to think everything started there. The Canal Town Museum is brimming with wonderful displays showcasing many of the great thing that originated in Canastota, from Weed chains that made the Great Road Race from New York to Paris possible to the Mutascope -the precursor to the Nickelodeon. We will most likely be back again next week with a stop off in Wampsville. We'll have to find out the origin of that name, too.
Thanks for traveling with us, Lance and Sharry

Road Trip to Kniste-Stota (Canastota)
The Adirondack Spirit of Giving
Knitters from the Old Forge area, including members of the Pointed Pine Quilters, have knitted hundreds of hats and mittens to keep needy children in the Utica area warm this winter. Old Forge Hardware is the drop-off point and also donates yarn to knitters. Volunteers of the annual Clothe-a-Child project met at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and matched up hundreds of coats, hats and mittens, preparing them for distribution to needy children in the Utica area.
The Christ Child Society is a national organization that is devoted to caring for needy children. The organization was founded in 1887 and has over 31 chapters throughout the United States.

The Canastota Public Library on W. Center Street is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1902, the Carnegie Fund offered $10,000 for the construction of a new facility. The Syracuse architect Archimides Russell was commissioned to design the facility, and construction was completed by William Funda and Delmonico Brothers of Syracuse. Nearly 300 people attended the opening ceremony of the new library in 1903. The library is still a center of activity. Click here to see the many activities scheduled.

Canastota Canal Town Museum
Once a bakery and residence of the 19th century, the Canastota Canal Town Museum offers a history of the "Old Erie Canal" and brings to life local folklore and history. Located beside a remnant of the original Canal, the Museum is filled with authentic memorabilia, art, and other exhibits explaining Canastota's contributions to the Canal, business, industry and agriculture.

International Boxing Hall of Fame
In 1982, residents of Canastota decided to
honor former welterweight and middleweight
champion of the late-1950s, Carmen Basilio,
and his nephew, Billy Backus, who won the
world welterweight title in 1970. The towns-
people raised funds for a showcase that
would celebrate the achievements their two
local heroes. The success and enthusiasm for that project encouraged Canastotians to explore the possibility of establishing boxing's first hall of fame and museum. That project was completed in 1989, when two dozen former champions witnessed the ribbon cutting ceremony of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
