Road Trip to the Black Beach -The Mucklands of Canastota
The Adirondack Spirit of Giving
Knitters from the Old Forge area, including members of the Pointed Pine Quilters, have knitted hundreds of hats and mittens to keep needy children in the Utica area warm this winter. Old Forge Hardware is the drop-off point and also donates yarn to knitters. Volunteers of the annual Clothe-a-Child project met at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and matched up hundreds of coats, hats and mittens, preparing them for distribution to needy children in the Utica area.
The Christ Child Society
is a national organization that is devoted to caring for needy children. The organization was founded in 1887 and has over 31 chapters throughout the United States.

Greystone Castle
Isadore A. Rapasadi and his family came to this country from Italy in 1920. They moved to Canastota, a dominant area in New York State onion production with its rich muckland known as the "black beach." At the age of 14, Isadore's father presented him with a "scuffle", that was a hoe with both edges sharpened used to weed between and around onion rows. Today, four generations later,  Isadore A. Rapasadi and Sons grows and ships onions and potatoes all over the East Coast.

We didn't realize Canastota was such an Italian town. Must have been the overflow from East Utica? The mucklands attracted immigrant farmers at the turn of the last century. The rich soil south of Oneida Lake is perfect for growing onions and potatoes. Sharry grew up in Chittenango and the smell of onions at Isadore A. Rapasadi & Sons brought back childhood memories of living near potato and onion farms.

The Italian immigrants laid the bricks for Peterboro and Main St. in Canastota. They erected buildings such as the old Methodist Church. Construction of this amazing building began in 1909 and served as a church until the 1960s. During the next 30 years the building fell into major disrepair and was slated for demolition in the early 1990's. Martin H. Bargabos, a local building contractor who loved the old architecture and the building's history, purchased the Greystone and saved it from the wrecking ball. Martin completed renovating the entire castle in 1995. He and his wife Annette opened their business, Greystone Castle, Inc. You can peak inside during their Bridal Show next Sunday, Feb 22 from 1-4pm.
Rick's Rags
Featured Artist, Amanda Klish
Amanda was born to be a sculptor. She has
been drawing since she was 3 and studied
works of Michelangelo before she could
read. When she studied art in college, the
world of sculpture opened to her. Her love
of three dimension art and her fascination
with the human form give her endless material to explore. Her sculptures portray the beauty that is in every person young and old, well known and forgotten, middle class and poor.
Malio shares one of his favorite Italian treats, Pizzelle. This traditional dessert was once made on cast iron in the fire, but now it's easy with electric Pizzelle irons. The rum and orange rind add the delicious flavor to this waffle cookie.
Located in the heart of Fly Creek, in what looks like an old barn that has always been there, is Heartworks Quilts & Fabrics.

Rick and his wife, Penny, started Rick's Rags back in 1984 with their sons Zachary and Erick.  They started out with just a pair of scissors and a small pile of discarded clothes and worked out of their mobile home, producing about 100 pounds of cleaning rags per week. Today, Rick's Rags produces over 30 different grades of cleaning rags for industrial and residential use. They produce cut rags at the rate of 600-1,000 pounds per hour.

The magnificent Madison County Courthouse was built in 1909. Wampsville was chosen as the seat of Madison County because it was centralized between Oneida and Canstota. It was built in the
