We met Art at his studio in Holland Patent as he was preparing for a big show outside of NY State. The beatutiful porcelain was still cooling after being fired and we could hear the faint pinging sound the pottery makes as it cools. Art's work can be seen at Sunflower Naturals, the MWPAI art shop, and his website, www.artbairdpottery.com.

The twin churches are built of Trenton Limestone and are on the National Historic Register.
Holland Patent celebrated its Bicentennial in 1997. The community had a parade in which they reenacted the arrival of President, Grover Cleveland. The reality was that the day the president and his wife arrived, their train was early and no one was there to greet them, so they walked up the streets of Holland Patent with their luggage with no fanfare.
Holland Patent's train depot was restored and is now part of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad tours. Deputy Mayor, Tom Furlong, was dedicated to restoring Holland Patent's Train Depot and believes it is an important part of Holland Patent's heritage.
Grover Cleveland's parents are buried in Holland Patent. His sister, Rose, was First Lady during the President's first term, as he was a bachelor at the time. Rose worked to raise money to beautify Holland Patent's Cemetery. The Cleveland's gravesite is also a memorial to Rose and two of their sons who were tragically lost at sea.
Richard trudged through the snow to vist the Cleveland's gravesite.
Oneida County
Rural Telephone

In the fall of 1904, rural mail
carrier Ellis Jones gathered
together a group to build a
telephone line from Stittville to Camroden. That group of 10 men installed the poles, strung the line and were able to listen to the results of the presidential election between Theodore Roosevelt and Alton Park over the telephone. A century later, the company, now known as Northland Communications, is still going strong under the direction of the McCarthy family.
A ring-a-ding-ding! Richard is impressed with the thousands of phone lines at Oneida County Rural Telephone.

This week, we traveled to Holland Patent. The village was originally named Public Square because of the village park. Today the park is still a symbol of pride for the community and is on the National Historic Register. Overlooking the park are the unique twin churches. The presbyterian and baptist churches were built side by side until they were connected as the First Presbyterian Church.
