It's the middle of summer so we hit the beach! Sylvan Beach is such a fun day-trip from the Mohawk Valley. On a nice evening it's great to hop in the car and take a sunset swim and enjoy dinner overlooking the water. It's amazing how many people we meet who travel far from out-of-state to Sylvan Beach for their vacation spot -we just take it for granted.

Road Trip to Sylvan Beach
The creeks that lead into Oneida Lake were important strategic waterways in pre-Revolutionary times. Wood Creek enters the lake from the east and was the site of a British blockhouse built shortly after the French and Indian war. When the Erie Canal was constructed, it cut right down the center of the creek. You can still see remains of the old creek, now used as harbors for boats accessing the lake.
A blockhouse, like this one, was built where Wood Creek entered Oneida Lake. An aerial view shows remnants of Wood Creek after the canal was built
Buoy #106
The old buoys have come in from Oneida Lake after serving for decades, marking safe channels for boats. The original buoys were gas fired and were lit every day by buoy-tenders. They were eventually upgraded to battery-powered. Today the new buoys are solar-powered with LED lights. When Buoy #106 was retired it was placed in the middle of the village park in Sylvan Beach.
When you reached bouy #106, you knew you had arrived at Sylvan Beach

Sylvan Beach Amusement Park
For an old, classic park, there's always something new at Sylvan Beach Amusement Park. Last year it was The Rotor, this year it's the Himalaya. This nostalgic ride was made in France and features the original artwork from the 1970's. When you go there, see if you can you identify the likeness of a "classic beauty" icon of the era?
Also new this summer (coming soon) is The Screamer. This 2,000 horsepower speed boat will take up to 40 passengers on a tour of the lake. Featuring music and 180 degree spins, this boat is sure to attract thrill seekers!
Breakfast with Malio
WhenMalio saw the movie, Moon-struck,
he was fascinated by the breakfast prepared by Olympia Dukakis's character.. He found out many of his East Utica neighbors enjoyed that breakfast regularly. Take some fresh Italian bread, butter both sides, cut a large circle out of the middle, brown one side in a skillet, flip over, and then break an egg in the middle and cook until egg is done to your liking. Serve with the middle section of bread (grilled), top with peppers and sausage or bacon.

Verona Beach State Park
In addition to the miles of sidewalks in Sylvan Beach, there are miles of hiking trails in nearby Verona Beach State Park. The lake, Black Creek, cattail marshes, and bottomland hardwood swamps give Verona Beach one of the most diverse aquatic habitats in the Central Region, and well worth a hike on the "Woods and Wetland" nature trail.
Dining
There are so many places to dine at The Beach. Always fresh seafood is the draw to Canal View Cafe. Overlooking the canal, this Sylvan Beach "museum" is filled with memorabilia.

Yesterday's Royal is popular for its homemade ice cream and entertainment, including bands, dinner theater, and polka parties.
