We're glad we get to spend another week in the beautiful City of Oneida. This Friday, April 6th, "30 places to shoot within 60 miles of Utica"
All meetings and workshops, unless otherwise indicated, are held at the Heritage Health Care Center at 1657 Sunset Avenue in Utica. Meetings and workshops begin at 7:00 pm.
At Caruso's Cafe, Carmen passes on his knowledge of making
breads and pastries the traditional Italian way. "Slow food" is becoming more and more popular in Europe and the U.S. as people begin to long for tradition. Italian Easter Bread (Casatiello) is braided sweet bread with eggs woven inside -a symbol of new life.
Mike is braiding bread the traditional way he learned from Carmen Caruso.
Oneida Community Mansion
We trace Oneida Ltd.'s history to the Oneida Community. For 33 years this religiously-based Perfectionist Community challenged contemporary social views on property ownership, gender roles, child-rearing practices, monogamous marriage, and work. From their insistence on life-long learning and vigorous health, they developed a work ethic that resulted into one of the most impressive manufacturing companies of the 20th century.
The 93,000 sq. foot mansion was built brick by brick in stages beginning in 1862. It is now a museum and residence.
You can enter our drawing to win overnight accomodations, breakfast and a tour of the Oneida Community Mansion House. Just email us or send us a letter with your name and hometown. Drawing will be announced on next week's show. (April 15, 2007)
There are many springtime events held at the Mansion House, including A Natural Living Primer: "Organic Perennial Gardening," with John Barron this Tuesday night at 7pm
Sherrill Manufacturing
Silversmithing is alive and well at Sherrill Manufacturing. The company is carrying on the tradition of Oneida Ltd. Facing stiff competition from importers in combination with changing market conditions, Oneida Ltd. was forced to cease manufacturing operations in North America and sold the facility to Sherrill Manufacturing on March 22, 2005. The current owners Matthew Roberts and Gregory Owens founded SMI to operate as an independent supplier to Oneida Ltd.
Shako:wi Cultural Center
Long before the Perfectionists persued Utopia in Oneida, the indigenous people were living it. The Shako:wi Cultural Center shares the culture, history and heritage of the Oneida People.
