We had a great time uncovering the history in Deansboro. With the help of local historian, Dorothy McConnell, we learned about the early settlers, including the Brothertown Indian Community. We got some great excercise and muddy feet looking for the burial ground of Samson Occum, and what a beautiful view of the valley!

Deansboro is the only Hamlet in the Town of Marshall. It is divided by the Oriskany Creek that runs South to North and empties into the Mohawk in Oriskany. The fertile soil that surrounded the creek made the area good for farming. The Brothertown Indian Settlement was here, led by Samson Occum.
Samson Occum
(1723-1792) was a
Mohegan and one
of the first ordained
Christian Indian
ministers. Occum's
popularity as an
eloquent teacher and spiritual leader grew with Indians over a large part of New England.
One of the burial grounds for the Brothertown Community is off of Bogusville Hill Rd. If you would like to visit the cemetery please contact Mr. Lawrence Ames at 841-4363. He will be happy to give you a tour.
An entrepreneurial spoon-maker in Deansboro found making spoons not as profitable as actually making money. The bogus coins he produced got him in trouble with the Federal Government. It is believed the plates he used are buried on Bogusville Hill Rd.
