We hope our viewers never tire of visiting family-owned businesses, because we always seem to find so many of them in our travels and we're going to keep bringing them to you. It's really wonderful to see 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations not only carrying on their family's business, but working hard at it and prospering.
Thanks for traveling with us,

No, figs are
not native to
Utica or any
part of North
America.
Italian immi-
grants brought fig trees with them from Italy when they settled in Utica in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was a connection to their homeland and became a symbol of perseverance in the face of adversity. Pat Corriero has cared for a cutting from his father's fig tree for over 40 years. His giant tree produces sweet figs every fall that he shares with his appreciative neighbors.
The Half Way Bridge
Not even 10 years after it was built, the Half Way Bridge was deemed unnecessary and residents wanted it razed, but it stood for over 55 years connecting Yorkville and Utica.
Called "the bridge that wouldn't die," the Half Way Bridge was razed in 1970, but not without a fight. 17 pounds of dynamite was detonated, but the bridge did not fall, more dynamite was used to no effect, finally more dynamite was used and the bridge finally succumbed.
Hippo's House of Billiards
Hippo's House of Billiards just off Commercial Drive, was named for a nickname of the owner's grandfather. Victor Conte operates the pool hall and restaurant with his wife and children. It is open for tournaments and for family fun and birthday parties.
