The land south of Cooperstown wasn't settled until after the American Revolution. Although some early settlers came to Milford around 1770, it was still considered "untamed," until the Sullivan-Clinton campaign against Loyalists ("Tories") and the four nations of the Iroquois that sided with the British.

Episode #234 September 20, 2009
Richard just adored Milford. The old, old houses, the drive through the beautiful rolling hills of "Leatherstocking Country," and the lazy Susquehanna River rolling by. We are going to return there next week to learn more about its history.

Antiques
We didn't realize how many antique shops there are in Milford. We visited the brand new Old Gristmill Antiques located in a mill from the late 1700s. The mill was built on the bank of the Susquehanna and across the river, the mill owner's brother built a lumber yard. A dam in the river harnessed the river's energy for the mill and also kept the logs from the lumber yard from floating downstream.
Clever signs and historic buildings make antique shopping in Milford a unique experience
