We had so much fun in New York Mills. It is a pretty little village with many parks and a beautiful golf course right in the middle. We discovered the timeless arts of watch repair and fly fishing (on the twin ponds!) Segean Karam, with the help of his wife Mary Ann, performed traditional Lebanese music for us.
Thanks for traveling with us,

When
Malio
saw the
movie,
Moon-
struck,
he was interested in the breakfast prepared by the character played by Olympia Dukakis. He came to find out many of his East Utica neighbors enjoyed that breakfast regularly. Take some fresh Italian bread, butter both sides, cut a large circle out of the middle, brown one side in a skillet, flip over, and then break an egg in the middle and cook until egg is done to your liking. Serve with the middle section of bread (grilled), top with hot or sweet peppers and sausage or bacon.
The history of the mills in New York Mills begins shortly after the Revolutionary War. Congress passed the Embargo Act of 1807, lessening America's dependence on goods from England. It was a boom to this region's textile mills.
Two early founding families in New York Mills were the Walcotts and the Campbells. They were leaders in the textile industry and constructed 3 groups of mills. Their legacy can be seen in the areas parks and churches.
The Walcott and Campbell Estates. Twin Ponds Golf Course and the Glenview Cemetery are located on the former Campbell Estate
There are many beautiful churches in New York Mills. The Calvary Gospel Church was formerly the Walcott Memorial Presbyterian, built by one of New York Mills' founding families.
Village life revolved around the mills. On the corner of Main and Walcott is one of the original bells from Mill #2. It was rung at 9pm indicating a curfew.
The banquet facilities are built around the original Campbell carriage house.
Twin Pond's co-owner, David Girmonde, looks at old pictures with his father, Joseph.
D&D Sports
and
The Jade Fox
Across from Twin Ponds Golf Club you can find everything you need for fishing and fly fishing at D&D Sports. Right next door is the new location of the New Age store, The Jade Fox
John Bianco teaches fly casting and fly tying at D&D Sports. Every summer they hold a fishing derby for kids in the ponds at Twin Ponds Golf Club. Fly tying class start in January.
We met watch repairman, Dick Kiel, at the Village Time Shop at 45 Burrstone Road. He graduated from the Bulova School of Watchmaking in New York City and has been overwhelmed with work ever since. He's even appeared on Sesame Street! Call 736-9095
Karam's Bakery and Restaurant
We enjoyed Lebanese food and Turkish coffee at Karam's at 137 Campbell Ave. Segean Karam played a beautifully carved instrument that grinds coffee as you play. Phone 736-1728
Just before Eagle Bay on the left hand side is the trail head to Bubb Lake. This nice 10-15 minute trail to a quiet lake continues to Sis Lake. Gary VanRiper explains the advantage of having trail maps to plan your hike. ADK Trails West Central Region is available at most local book stores.
