Episode #238 October 18, 2009
"What a Beautiful Prospect!" That is what is believed to have been exclaimed by Colonel Mappa when he first viewed Prospect Falls and envisioned a settlement there. Over the next 100 years it developed into a bustling village as a gateway to the Adirondacks and popular stop for vacationers arriving by train. The end of the train era, and new highways that bypassed the village, left it annexed like many other small villages we see today. It's a quiet and peaceful place to visit if you take the time to wander off of Route 12 or 365.

The first pioneers came to Prospect in the 1700s. By the time the village was incorporated in 1890, Prospect was a bustling village with tanneries, mills, taverns, and hotels catering to the Adirondack vacationers who arrived by train.

Pretty little Union Park is in the center of the village on the former site of the Union Hotel. There is a great lookout over the gorge and Prospect Falls -a sight to see, especially when the water is unleashed.

Howard Thomas
Prospect's famous son, author, Howard Thomas, worked and ran a publishing company and Prospect's first library out of his home and barn at 802 State Street.

Howard Thomas published a number of books starting with his first book, Life of a Village, a history of Prospect. He established a scholarship for the continuing education of Prospect youth that is still granted annually.
A History of Softball
Prospect has a long history of softball and has the longest continually running softball tournament in the nation. Visit the village offices to see old pictures and memorabilia from Prospect's favorite pastime -or better yet, attend the annual event next Labor Day weekend!

Just outside of Prospect, on Route 12 in Barneveld, is a new restaurant operated by old friends from East Utica. The Ventura family has brought the taste of East Utica to the north country, including riggies and pasta fagioli made with homemade pasta.
