Road Trip to French & Burrstone Roads
The French Road Burrstone Road area is a little bit Utica, New York Mills and New Hartford, but it is a community in itself. One account attributes the name of French Road to the French family who is buried on French Road. Another attributes it to the preferred french millstones used by Alfred Munson to be machined into buhrstones for grain mills, hence the names French and Burrstone Roads.

With winter setting in we head to Coldbrook to visit with Tim and Peggy at the Shawangunk Nature Preserve. They are toasty warm in their little solar heated and wood heated home. Enjoying the sunny days playing music and enjoying their hobbies. Peggy is preparing balsam branches for her popular upcoming Balsam Wreath making workshop on Sat. Dec. 6.
One account of the Munson family's history claims that entreprenuer, Alfred Munson, was on a journey between New York and Hartford when he came upon a Frenchman who was skilled in making millstones. Alfred Munson began the manufacture of French buhr stones in Utica-the first establishment of the kind in this country. The businessman supported and invested in the canal and railroad -everything to promote the economic growth and manufacturing interests of Utica. He became the richest man in Oneida County and probably the first Munson in the country to become a millionaire.
Munson Machinery Company is a world leader in mixers, blenders, and size reduction equipment for bulk solid materials. Since 1823, Munson has continually set the industry standard for durability, evidenced by numerous machines from the early 1900s operating at customer locations to this day.
