Episode #243 November 22, 2009
It's been a few years since our last visit to Waterville. The bandstand that was just a dream on our first visit, a drawing on our second visit, is now a reality in the village park. Also, the British pub that was rumored to be opening in the old Waterville Hotel is now open for business. We always enjoy seeing what's new in places we've visited before and hope you do, too.

A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge
Watch Video
Watch Video
There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

Joey's Restaurant is named after previous owners, Joe and Joe before him. According to the Italian "old-timers" we met there, the restaurant has been around since the 1930s. Owner, Michael Brown says the most important thing he learned while working for the previous owner, was to "make what you like, then you'll make it right!"

History and Hops
Pryputniewicz Potato Farm
General William Floyd
We didn't discover anything new at Pruputniewicz Potato Farm (except a new harvest) it seems everyone knows of this third generation farm on Route 12. There was a constant flow of traffic coming to pick up squash, cabbage, brussel sprouts and of course, potatoes.
Grace Episcopal Church
Grace Episcopal Church was built in 1854 and has 2 original Tiffany windows. The one of Christ is beautifully detailed with robes of rose and burgundy.

The Great Nine-Mile Swamp in Waterville was the ideal hiding place for the notorious Loomis Gang and also a great resource for hops poles needed for Waterville's most profitable crop. Waterville was once known as the "Hops Capitol of the Country."

From French pastries to an authentic British pub, you'll feel like you're in Europe when you visit Waterville. The former Waterville Hotel has been restored and transformed into an English pub, complete with fish & chips on Friday nights.
