Episode #242 November 15, 2009
We often forget that even this late in the season farmers are still busy harvesting the year's crop. Squash, cabbage and brussel sprouts are coming in from the fields and what a treat. Squash is an autumn favorite. There are so many varieties and different ways to prepare them. We're trying a hubbard squash for the first time this week. Next week we'll be learning more about local squash.

A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge
Watch Video
Watch Video
There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

Joey's Restaurant is named after previous owners, Joe and Joe before him. According to the Italian "old-timers" we met there, the restaurant has been around since the 1930s. Owner, Michael Brown says the most important thing he learned while working for the previous owner, was to "make what you like, then you'll make it right!"

Road Trip to Rome and Westernville area
Whenever we explore a new area we visit local historical societies and meet with local historians. The Rome Historical Society at 200 Church St., is an amazing resource we have often utilized. Admittance is free and it is open Tues-Fri: 10am-5pm, Sat: 10am-3pm
Rome Historical Society
The Town of Western was formed from the Town of Steuben in 1797. The fertile soil and abundant water from the Mohawk, Lansing Kill, and many other streams, made it an ideal place to settle. Soon farms, mills, shops, schools and factories developed.
Westernville
The Mohawk River and many other water sources made Western ideal for settlement. Click on mapto enlarge
You can learn more about the history of Western in the book, Moccasin Tracks to Ski Trails
A Tale of Two Villages
The Empire Hotel was dismantled and moved to Westernville before the village of Delta was flooded. It now serves as the Town Hall.
General William Floyd
William Floyd was a signer of theDeclaration of Independence as a representative of New York. His home is in Westernville and has been restored.
Westernville Presbyterian Church
William Floyd is buried in the Westernville Cemetery behind the  Westernville Presbyterian Church. The church was built in 1818 and has been in continual service since. It has beautiful stained glass windows that have a modern look although they are 100 years old.
Mysterious Boody Hill
We've had a few requests from viewers and have seen some interesting newspaper articles about Boody Hill. Since we were in the area (off of Carmicheal Hill Road in Frenchville, north of Westernville at 10022 Boody Hill Road) we thought we'd venture up. The owner, Robert E. Smith, has been described as eccentric. He has tends to thousands of plants, his extensive Linn tractor collection, and works to preserve the memory of one of his ancestors, Jacob Boody. Boody was a man ahead of his time, studying agriculture, taxidermy, history and science. He carved many sculptures on giant rocks. The subjects reflected his beliefs.
Jacob Boody was born in 1839. He was ahead of his time, believing in equal rights for all. People came from all around the world to hear him speak.
One of the remaining sculptures. Nearly 100 were carved, but they have mysteriously disappeared.
