Episode #240 November 1, 2009
It's nice to have the sun up in the morning -thanks to the time change, but we're not looking forward to the shortened shooting days ahead. When it gets dark at 4:00 it's tough to get all the filming done with enough light.
We do look forward to the change of seasons. It's part of what living in the Mohawk Valley is all about. Farmers live by the seasons, planning and predicting. At Dwyer Farm, we learned that this autumn was a tough one for harvesting corn and hay. Dry weather is crucial and we've had an unusually wet fall. You can visit Dwyer Farm today and experience a working dairy farm.

Road Trip to Dairy Country -Lowville
Lowville is located North of Utica and is to the east of The Tug Hill Region. The Tug Hill Plateau is separated from the Adirondacks by the Black River Valley. Although the region is and has traditionally been known as the Tug Hill Plateau since it is flat on top, it is actually not a plateau. Technically, the Tug Hill could more accurately be called a cuesta since it is actually composed of sedimentary rocks that tip up on one side, rising from about 350 feet on the west to over 2,000 feet in the east. Because of this altitude, the area receives a lot of snow and wind.
Lowville Producers Dairy Cooperative
Lowville Producers Dairy Cooperative began in 1936 and has been in business for almost 73 years. The Co-op represents about 200 member/owner farms who will produce in excess of 315 million pounds of milk in 2008. Lowville Producers is the largest Dairy Cooperative in the county with over 65% of the milk produced in Lewis County handled through us. Lowville Producers is 41st in size among hundreds of dairy cooperatives in the United States. The Cheese Store carries all kinds of cheese and a variety of New York State products.
Open Monday-Friday 8-5 & Saturday 8-Noon
Lewis County Historical Society

There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

Back in the mid 1960s, when rock & roll was beginning to blossom in the U.S., a little music store opened in East Utica. Art Nicotera was a self-taught guitarist, mandolin player, and keyboard player who gave lessons at his home. Soon his hobby took over the garage and his music shop soon sold instruments, music and everything else a musician needed. 40 years later, his daughter, Rosemary, is carrying on the family tradition.
