This week's show went by fast -literally! We went to the races in Vernon, both harness and dirt track. We never knew how fun the horse track was for families, seeing the horses warm up and then watch them come over the finish line. Lance and I didn't even have tickets, but I was cheering over the fence as they thundered by! It's pretty neat to have two exciting race tracks just minutes from Utica.
                                                     Thanks for racing with us,
                                                                                 Sharry and Lance

The origins of a library in Utica date back to 1825 at the Broad St. offices of Attorney Justus Rathbone, know then as simply the Utica Library. In 1899, after several moves and a book collection and demand for services growing, a move to construct a new, permanent structure begins. Thomas R. & Frederick T. Proctor donate the land, and W.P. White gives $1,000 to start a building fund. The citizens
of Utica
approve a
bond issue
to finance
the project.

Road Trip to Vernon
Vernon was once know for all its mills, one mill was famous for its pancake flour. Nowadays, most people think of racing when they think of Vernon.
United Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church in Vernon can't be missed. It's eye-catching salmon color and architecture are unique.
Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church
Another unique church, and Vernon's oldest, is the Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church. The bell tower is on the front lawn. It was removed because the whole church would shake when the bell was rung.

Utica Rome Speedway
Our brilliant idea of having Richard open the show from inside Willy Decker's 358 modified almost killed our host. Metal doesn't bend and we found out Richard doesn't either, at least not enough to pry him into the car.
The Utica Rome Speedway has a long proud history in Vernon. Races are Sunday evenings at 5:30pm. To learn more visit: http://www.uticaromespeedway.com/
2-time track champion, Willy Decker is a Vernon native and dreamed of racing as a kid. Having a race track in his backyard was a real bonus!
Vernon Downs
Race manager, Scott Hobbs, is working to make the track more family-friendly. He has added a play area for young children.
We toured the stables where hundreds of race horses are cared for. We met
"Cash in Your Chips" being groomed before the race. He seemed to be used to cameras and attention.
Vernon Downs post time is 6:55pm on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings
The Black Stallion Restaurant
The Black Stallion Restaurant is an area landmark. Sal Vullo is carrying on his parents tradition. The restaurant is also a sponsor of Willy Decker's racing.
