History, Architecture, and Cheese
The earliest settlers of the area were involved in river trade and the commerce associated with the portage or carry, around the rapids. Little Falls was the site of several frontier industries during the 18th century, including a saw mill, grist mills and a foundry at the mouth of Furnace Creek. A cheeseexchange was established and in the years 1853 - 1875, Little falls was cheese market to the Nation.
Katie Lyon, President of the Little Falls Historical Society, invites you to take a walking tour of the city's architecture. Little blue guidebooks are available throughout the city. The Museum opens for the season May 24.
Moss Island at Lock 17
A visit to Moss Island is fun for the whole family. You might catch some boats going through Lock 17, until recently, the largest lift lock in the world. (40.5 feet!) You can explore the island's many "potholes" created thousands of years ago. You can get to Moss Island from Canal Place or from Rt. 169 South-follow signs to Lock 17.
Hansen "Tea" Island
If you drink Salada or Red Rose Tea, it came from Little Falls. Redco Foods http://www.redcofoods.com/ is located on Hansen Island and produces both teas. Salada Tea is known for its "Tag Lines," little quotes printed on the tags to ponder while your tea steeps. Red Rose is known for its figurines hidden inside of each box

Visit Cathedral Pines Memorial today
Sue Perkins from the Herkimer County Historical Society gave us more information about this memorial: Malcolm Blue's family was originally from Poland, NY and later lived in the Old Forge area. His father Ernest was a District Forests Ranger for the NYS Conservation Department for many years. Malcolm had worked summer for the Conservation Department.
After Malcom's death Ernest wanted to do something in memory of his son. Cathedral of the Pines was Ernest's favorite spot. He was given permission to place the memorial plaque on the tree of his selection. The tree was struck by lightening and lingered for many years, it eventually fell. The pubic reacted and the State official the erected the stone monument. It is interesting to note Gov. Thomas E. Dewey was at the dedication of the marker in the Spring of 1946. The Society now has picture of the dedication e-mailed by Allan Blue.
