Back to Rome again this week. We got to meet some of the families that make the city what it is, from a large manufacturer, Rome Strip Steel, to the small (but very busy) Mazzaferro's Meat and Deli. Both these businesses started in the 1920s and are still family owned businesses!
Located in the heart of Fly Creek, in what looks like an old barn that has always been there, is Heartworks Quilts & Fabrics.

Founded in 1926, Rome Strip Steel is one of the
top producers of close tolerance cold rolled strip
steels in the world. They roll, anneal and slit a
wide range of cold rolled alloy, high carbon, low
carbon close tolerance strip steels, and various grades of high strength/low alloy steels. President, Kirk Hinman, is the grandson of the company's founder.

Al Nathan owns and operates Nathan's Bakery in Old Forge, where people come to drink coffee, listen to blues music and eat Adirondack Bagels -the ones with no hole in the center! Al is also a musician and plays contemporary and classic blues with Bluestreak. In 2006, they released their first CD, Blues and Black Coffee. BlueStreak can be found playing clubs and concerts throughout Central New York.
Wright Settlement,
Birthplace of Harold B. Wright
Wright Settlement is a hamlet north of Rome. The home/birthplace of author, Harold Bell Wright, still stands here. It was built in 1819 and was moved in 1952 to its present site to make way for Griffiss Airforce Base.
During the early 1900s, the novels of Harold Bell Wright outsold every other American writer. It is claimed that Wright was the first person to become a millionaire by writing novels and the first to write a novel that reached a million sales. Many movies were made from Wright's novels, including Gary Cooper's first major movie, The Winning of Barbara Worth and the John Wayne film, The Shepherd of the Hills .

Eddie's Paramount Diner is a popular family run diner and chances are you'll catch Eddie there. The diner was built by the Paramount Dining Car Company in the 1940s. it was moved to its current site on West Dominick Street in the 1970s.

Duncan has combined his own beautiful photography of the present with the historical images from the village and town historians of Otsego County and the collections of the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, to capture the delicate balance between the past and present of the 24 towns in the county.
