In celebration of women's history month we head to the hometown of women's rights leader, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. This week we head into the heart of the Mohawk Valley to historic Johnstown. From Johnson Hall to the Fulton County Courthouse you can feel the history when you visit this city.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in Johnstown in 1815. The daughter of a judge, she became a feminist after hearing her father inform abused women that they had no legal alternative but to endure mistreatment by their husbands and fathers. She had the best education then available to women. During the Civil War, Stanton and her friend and ally Susan B. Anthony created the National Woman's Loyal League to build support for what became the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton's bible, and other artifacts, are on display at the Johnstown Historical Society. Her bible was recently used for the swearing in of Johnstown's first female mayor. To tour the historical society call City Historian, Noel Levee at 518-762-7419
Sir William Johnson was the founder of Johnstown. He was an Irish pioneer and army officer in colonial New York and the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1755 to 1774. He served on the Governor's Council in New York, earned the rank of Major General in the British forces during the French and Indian War. His contributions in that war earned him enormous land grants in the Mohawk Valley.

Johnson Hall
This historic mansion was the scene of great activity during the life of Sir William and the center of an influence which largely shaped the destinies of the United Colonies. Many Indian councils were
held here within a circle
of locust trees still stand-
ing in front of the Hall.
The Fulton County Courthouse is oldest existing Court House in the State ofNew York and one of the oldest in the Nation stillbeing used as a Court House today
Union Hall Inn
Union Hall Inn is a famous Post-Revolutionary Tavern erected in 1798 by a former officer in the French Army under Louis XVI. It was the favorite Inn of Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napolean, who came to Johnstown to race his horse.

Today, father and daughter team, Kim and Megan Henck and Megan's fiance, Lauren, run this fine dining establishment. Megan and Lauren are both graduates of the Culinary Institute of America. Megan is the pastry chef and Lauren the head chef and dad handles lunch.
Terry and Erica Wilcox Murray are the new owners of the 108 year-old Old Forge Hardware.
Terry and Erica are both graduates of the Town of Webb School. Terry is a graduate of the Marina Mechanics Institute in Orlando, FL and Erica is a graduate of the State University of New York College at Fredonia with a degree in Communications. Both are passionate about the Adirondacks and their future at the Old Forge Hardware. Sarah and Linda Cohen are pleased that the store will remain in the hands of "Adirondackers."
