About once a year we make it a point to take a Road Trip to Utica's sister city, The City of Rome. We often forget about all the beautiful homes that line the neighborhood streets. Take a drive to Rome sometime just to look at some of the unique architecture along Chestnut, Washington, etc.

In the Kitchen with Malio
Pizzelle
Malio shares one of his favorite Italian treats, Pizzelle. This traditional dessert was once made on cast iron in the fire, but now it's easy with electric Pizzelle irons. The rum and orange rind add the delicious flavor to this waffle cookie.

At the end of the American Revolution, Irish immigrant and entreprenuer, Dominic Lynch, bought 2,000 acres in the area that is now Rome and named the town he founded after himself. His reluctance to sell the land in favor of leasing it made him unpopular and his name didn't stick. In 1819 the people of the village Lynch founded voted to name the community "Rome," after Italy's "eternal city."

Lynch's descendants became major employers in the area with their family business, Rome Turney Radiator Company. The company utilized the Long patented machinery for making a crimp based fin tubing used in the manufacture of radiators for early automobiles. The Rome Historical Society has items from this company in its permanent collection.

Located at 514 W. Dominick St. is The Arsenal House, built during the war of 1812, this strategically located building served as the residence for 11 commanding officers of the United States from 1815-1873. Across the street you can see the former baracks.
In a hangar overlooking the airstrip at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park is MVCC's Aircraft & Powerplant Training facility. Here students attend a program structured as a full-time, one-year training program, the only community college-based program in NY State. This FAA-authorized program prepares students to begin careers as aviation maintenance technicians. Properly trained and certified A&P technicians are essential to aviation safety. They provide required aircraft maintenance at regular intervals, and are qualified to recognize and address potential malfunctions before they become dangerous.
The Convent: Angels Nest Bed & Breakfast was once home to the Felician Sisters. The sisters moved in on September 7, 1950 after an impressive ceremony where the Most Reverend Bishop Foery blessed and laid the cornerstone. Today, it serves as a Bed and Breakfast and home to innkeeper and world traveler, Mary Davis.
MVCC has the only community college-based program for Aircraft and Powerplant training in NY State.
The Capitol Theatre's Moller Organ
The Capitol Theatre opened December 10, 1928 as part of the Kallet chain. It operated as a first run movie house until it closed in the 1970s. The Capitol reopened as a civic center in 1985, and recently the original installation historic Moller theatre organ was returned to working condition.
Hear the organ this Sat., March 7 at 7pm!

At nearly 90 years of age, Tony D'Apice still works on his 5/8" scale models of historic buildings with detail, accuracy and precision. He calls his art "creative recycling" and as an historian he prefers telling the area's history through its buildings. You can see examples of his work at the New Hartford Historical Society and the Schuyler Town Offices. To see his personal collection call 797-7178
