The Clark Mills Historical Society has an extensive collection of newsletters with all kinds of interesting information about this former mill town. It was another challenging week deciding what we would be able to include in a half hour show and how much we couldn't. We had to keep reminding ourselves that the show's mission is to spark interest and encourage exploration of  neighboring communities. Please visit the Clark Mills website for more fascinating information: www.clarkmills.org

Spend some time this week visiting one of the many beautiful parks in the area. F.T. Proctor Park named for Frederick T. Proctor, this large city park of 500 acres was donated to the city of Utica by the Proctor family in 1923. The famous landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed Central Park in New York City, was instrumental in designing this park. There's a beautiful children's play area next to Culver Ave.

Made possible by
Clark Mills
There's no mistaking that Clark Mills was once a thriving mill town, many of the 2-family homes still line the main streets of this historic hamlet. The Clark Mills Historical Society meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (except July & August) at 7 PM at the Clark Mills Senior Citizens Center.

The early settlers, the Clark family, built a grist mill on the banks of the Oriskany Creek. The mills were operated by Clark descendants but they eventually failed and by the end of the 1800s the area was in rapid decline. In the early 1900s, two wealthy Englishmen bought the defunct mill and brought many workers from England with them. They provided jobs, electricity, homes, a store, and a club for the community.

Grandma Bedelia thought she could give up breadmaking after over a half century of baking for her family, but her grandson, Chris Mody, wasn't going to let his favorite Lebanese bread go without a fight. Now he and his grandma are making bread together at Chris' new company, Grandma's Bread Company in Clark Mills. It is scheduled to open this July, but you can buy the delicious bread at local stores.
