Ride of the week
2009 Dodge
Grand Caravan SXT

This week we take our first ever Road Trip to a lake -Otsego Lake, and what a beauty! Its sparkling waters have lured people to its shores for centuries. The Mohawks camped and fished along its banks and in the 1800s, millions of Americans and Europeans were introduced to the region by James Fenimore Cooper in his novels. There are many opportunities to enjoy this nearby natural resource this summer.

The Tailor
of East Utica
John Plado was an apprentice to a tailor in Italy when he was just a boy. He came to America, and Utica, in the 1970s and opened his own shop on Bleecker Street. He is still there today, at 343 Bleecker Street, and at age 70 he's still making sure people are dressed just right.
Otsego Lake is nine miles long and if you look on a mpa of New York, you can see that it is geologically related to the Finger Lakes although not counted among them.
The lake was called Glimmerglass James Fenimore Cooper and was a principal feature in several of his novels, including The Pioneers, and Last of the Mohicans. You can actually visit some of the places mentioned in his books, like Council Rock, Sunken Island and the location of Natty Bummpo's cabin and Fairy Spring.
The Fenimore Museum's perminant collections includes painting inspires by Otsego Lake. In the Cooper Room you will find a map of the lake that indicates many of the locations of sites featured in James Fenimor Cooper's novels.
The is a new Interpretive Trail that leads you along the shore of Otsego Lake. Along the route are signs that highlight the connections between the museum's collections and their setting and focuses on the importance of the lake in American art, literature and history.
Summer Outdoor Film Series at 7:30. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, pack a snack or buy one at the cafe to enjoy on the terraced gardens overlooking the lake.
The Empire State Carousel is a museum you can ride. It has 25 hand-carved animals representing the agricultural and natural resources found in New York State. Other carved elements, such as folklore panels, depict Uncle Sam and Deerslayer, and portrait panels of such notable figures as Susan B. Anthony, Teddy Roosevelt, Grandma Moses and Jackie Robinson enhance the rounding boards.

Early visitors to the North Country, like loggers, hunters and fishermen, often utilized Guide Tents for shelter. They were also popular with early vacationers. At The Woods Inn in Inlet, you can experience the Adirondacks "1800s style," too, but with some modern day luxuries like heat, running water, and electricity.
