Ride of the week
2009 Dodge
Grand Caravan SXT

This week we return to Remsen. It's been over 2 years since our last visit and there are new places and people to visit. The countryside is fascination, rolling hills dotted with old trees and dotted with large boulders. Many people born and raised in Remsen, return to their hometown -there's something about this part of the Mohawk Valley that draws you back home.

The rolling hills of Remsen reminded the Welsh of their homeland
Fortunately since our last visit the 200-year-old blacksmith shop has been purchased and is in the process of being restored. A local woman and her helpful father and brother are working to preserve this landmark and hope to have it open for visitors this fall during the Remsen Barn Festival.

The stately Hutchinson house overlooking Main Street and Fairchild Road was built by a Welsh carpenter 200 years ago this year. It served as a post office and was home to Remsen's first postmaster, Stephen Hutchinson. It is now owned by Herb and Hazel Black.
Thanks to two retired school teachers (and sisters) this historic one-room schoolhouse has been preserved and maintained in its original state. When the Hallinan sisters died in the late 1970s, they left the school to the Willis Pugh family, who continues to care for this historic gem. For information contact Burlie Pugh at (315) 831-2063
The school is located North of Remsen on Lake Julia Road off of Fairchild Road.

The Tailor
of East Utica
John Plado was an apprentice to a tailor in Italy when he was just a boy. He came to America, and Utica, in the 1970s and opened his own shop on Bleecker Street. He is still there today, at 343 Bleecker Street, and at age 70 he's still making sure people are dressed just right.

She is partial to sunflowers and even has a red variety, but she grows all kinds of different flowers and is constantly experimenting with new ones. Fred Shurz formed the band in 1978 and named it for his eight-year-old son. Today Fritz performs alongside his father in the anything-but-typical polka band, Fritz's Polka Band.
