For the first time ever we took a Road Trip, not to a town or village, but to a road. We visited Bank Place in Downtown Utica. Even though it is a short one-way street and one side is taken up by the bank, there was hardy enough time to cover just some of the many interesting business along this historic lane.

Road Trip to Bank Place in Utica
Before there was Bank Place there was a bank, and before the bank, there was the Devereux brothers' general store. These brothers from Ireland were considered very trustworthy and people in the community started having them keep their money in a safe in their store. This was the early days of what was to become the Savings Bank of Utica. The beautiful gold domed bank was built at the turn of the twentieth century and was constructed to give the appearance of security and strength. There is a DVD available at the Oneida County Historical Society with rare pictures of the bank entitled, The Bank with the Gold Dome, by Scott Feisthumel.
John and Nicolas Devereux were entrusted with people's money at their general store in Utica
Before photo ID people's physical characteristics like height, weight, hair and eye color were used to identify bank customers
The famous Utica landmark was constructed starting in 1898
The dome is covered in 23-carat gold and has only had to be resurfaced 5 times in the last 100 years.
Currently there is a Peregrine Falcon nesting about the pediment of the bank. They are an endangered species that doesn't typically breed near Oneida County
A Stroll along Bank Place
Since the mid 1900s, Bank Place has been a popular shopping destination for hats, clothing, and gifts.
