Ride of the week
2009 Dodge
Grand Caravan SXT

This week we explore the dirt roads and trails in scenic Brookfield. Many of the town's roads my be unpaved, but don't let that stop you, they are smoother than many paved roads! We discover that Brookfield is a haven for horseback riding with miles and miles of state park trails. We also find other four-footed friends like cashmere goats and adorable "Baby Doll" sheep. You can learn more about them and see them at the 170th Madison County Fair this week -the theme this year is "Focus on Fiber."

The Tailor
of East Utica
John Plado was an apprentice to a tailor in Italy when he was just a boy. He came to America, and Utica, in the 1970s and opened his own shop on Bleecker Street. He is still there today, at 343 Bleecker Street, and at age 70 he's still making sure people are dressed just right.
There are miles and miles of unpaved roads throughout Brookfield. These old roads were the main roads back in the days of hops farms and mills. The early pioneers settled here in the late 1700s, attracted to the water of the Unadilla and its many tributaries, like Beaver Creek.
The Brookfield Historical Society has worked hard to locate, map, and mark the town's many old burial grounds. You can pick up a map at the historical society.
The Brookfield Historical Society is open 1-3pm Wed and Sat

The Brookfield Trail System is over 9,400 acres. This highly acclaimed horse and snowmobile trail system has over 130 miles of trails set throughout five state forests. The assembly area on Moscow road is the beginning of the trail system. The assembly and camping area can accommodate campers and approximately 150 horses with covered tie stalls, stallion box stalls, a pavilion and picnicking and camping facilities. Drinking water, accessible toilets and a mounting platform for people with disabilities is also provided.
At Taylor's Tack and Field horses and riders are trained for trail riding. Natural Horsemanship training helps people learn to better communicate with their horse -an important skill when on the trail. It is also a Bed & Breakfast for you and your horse.

Early visitors to the North Country, like loggers, hunters and fishermen, often utilized Guide Tents for shelter. They were also popular with early vacationers. At The Woods Inn in Inlet, you can experience the Adirondacks "1800s style," too, but with some modern day luxuries like heat, running water, and electricity.

Burial Grounds
Endless Trails Guest House offers accommodations for both guests and their horses and is located just 1/4 mile from the Brookfield Trail System.
The Olde Homestead is a family owned farm that raises Olde English Miniature Babydoll Southdown Sheep. The babydolls are great fun to raise and have brought new life back to an old farm. Babydolls are always smiling and are somtimes referred to as the Teddy Bear Sheep. You can see them at the Madison County Fair July 9-12 during Focus on Fiber.
Crystal Labyrinth
The Crystal Labyrinth covers an entire acre of a mountaintop field. It's surrounded & centered by quartz crystals that are buried at each point of the 13 point star which was the basic pattern for this Labyrinth. This walking meditation is a 3/4 mile walk to the center where you can sit and relax, meditate or just enjoy the surroundings.
Also at the Madison County Fair, you'll meet some of the Cashmere goats from Hermit Pond Farm. Pamela Haendle was instrumental in bringing the Focus on Fiber theme to the fair this year. Her herd of goats are raised for their Cashmere fleece, known throughout the world for its fine, soft texture. Hermit Pond Farm,  Brookfield 315- 899-7792  Email Pamela
Come celebrate the 170th anniversary of the Madison County Fair. Back in 1856, the appearance of famous orator and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, drew 12,000 people from all over Central NY. This year, to commemorate the event, a professional Douglass impersonator will deliver the same speech on July 11 at 1 pm in the Grand Stand. A historical marker will be placed to commemorate the event. Click here for Oneida Dispatch article
