Harold Frederic
Irishman growing up in this growing city, he observed the relations between Protestants and Irish Catholics during a time when scientific and religious thought was changing. These experiences helped shape his most famous work, The Damnation of Theron Ware. F. Scott Fitzgerald called it one of the great American novels. Frederic worked at the Observer Dispatch and by age 24 was editor, he went on to become a NY Times reporter. He died at the age of 42 but wrote many novels and short stories, many set in the Mohawk Valley. Check him out at the library!
Born in Utica in 1856, Harold Frederic was raised and educated in East Utica. As a young
Irish Immigrants Help Build Canals
The Mohawk Valley's Irish heritage runs deep. In the
early 1800s, waves of Irish immigrants came to Utica to
help construct the Erie Canal. In 1837, the Black River
Canal began being built, largely by Irish immigrants.
The new Boonville Black River Canal Museum
opened in June 2007 and chronicles this engineering
feat. Open Thursday-Monday 10-4pm.

The Mohawk Valley's Irish Heritage can be felt everywhere, in the local music, parades, foods and festivals. We did some shopping at Accents of Ireland in the New Hartford Shopping Center.

Author, Jim O'Looney
Jim O'Looney came to America in 1958. After a long career at the Observer Dispatch and MVCC, he retires and began his book, A Time to Reflect. It is the story of growing up in Ireland, meeting the love of his life, starting a family and moving to Utica to live the American Dream. the book is available at Accents of Ireland in the New Hartford Shopping Center.

Fyreside Irish Setters
If you visit the Great American Irish Festival today, be sure to stop by to see the Dogs of Ireland. There you will meet some Irish Setters from Fyreside. Although the new litter that arrived last week is too young to attend the festival this year, the proud mother, Saranac, invited us to her home in the hills north of Utica to see the pups.

Butler-Sheenan Academy of Irish Dance
The Butler-Sheehan Academy of Irish Dance was started in Dublin, Ireland approximately 60 years ago by Mae Butler. Her son, Patrick Butler, taught in New York State for over thirty years until his recent untimely death. The Academy is now under the capable guidance of his protégé, Pattie Sheenan-Malinowski. The Academy is located in Syracuse and holds classes in Rome, NY every Wednesday.

Every Friday night there's Irish music at Piggy Pat's. We were thrilled to meet local Irish music legend, Vince Colgan. The master storyteller and balladeer has entertained generations.

Mist Fairies and Leprechauns
Local artist and historian, Jim Parker, has created a storybook encorporating Irish legend and real place in the North Country. You can meet him and buy his book at the Clinton Farmers Market every Thursday from 11-5:00pm
The Mist Fairies teach the Leprechauns Irish step dancing. they live in the mist of the Adirondack waterfalls.
