The Tailor
of East Utica
John Plado was an apprentice to a tailor in Italy when he was just a boy. He came to America, and Utica, in the 1970s and opened his own shop on Bleecker Street. He is still there today, at 343 Bleecker Street, and at age 70 he's still making sure people are dressed just right.

Next week: We continue our tour of classic Route 20
See the USA in your Chevrolet (or the Mohawk Valley in your Ford!)
My favorite day of the week is when we take our Road Trip to explore a local community. I am always amazed at all the hamlets and villages I never knew were there. This week we traveled a mile south of Rt. 20 into Cherry Valley, what a nice surprise -beautiful homes, historic buildings, old businesses, and one of the nicest museums we've seen. There are also 3 large waterfalls we didn't get to this week, but that's one of the many discovers you can make when you take your Road Trip to Cherry Valley!
Thanks for watching, Sharry and Lance

Road Trip Route 20
Cherry Valley
Just a mile off of the present day Route 20, is the original Route 20 (now Rt. 54) which leads to the pretty little historic village of Cherry Valley.
Cherry Valley Museum
The Cherry Valley Museum is housed in a
converted Hop Barn on upper Lancaster Street.
In 1959, it moved to its present site at 49 Main
Street. The Museum houses a large collection
of artifacts which displays much of the history
of the Cherry Valley and surrounding areas. The museum is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission fees are $5.00 adults, $4.50 seniors, free under 11 years
Clough's Bookshop
Clough's Bookshop is located in the building that was the area's first telegraph office in 1844.
81 Alden Street (
607) 264-8471

Samuel Morse
In 1837 Samuel F B Morse
and Amos L Swan (manufacturer
of the Cherry Valley Melodeon)
developed the first working
telegraph machine.
Rury's Food Store
Right on Main Street in Cherry Valley is a beautiful old general store. Be sure to visit Rury's Food Store with the kids so they can hear the screen door squeak and see the old wooden shelves, wooden counter made in Ilion, NY and old fashion scales.
The Tepee
3 miles east of the historic village of Cherry Valley, NY is the epitome of Route 20, The TePee. Built it 1950, the original TePee was located on old Route 20 and was torn down and rebuilt on a larger scale when the current Route 20 was constructed. Try their terrific chili!
Do drink the water in "Happy Valley"
Many people claim that the people in Cherry Valley are so friendly because of their water. The local spring water actually has traces of lithium. Read the NY Times article, click here
