A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge
There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

The Goodyear family donated some of their land on the shore of Otsego Lake to Glimmerglass Opera and also to SUNY Oneonta as a field station. The GoodYear Swamp Sanctuary is open to the public dawn to dusk. There are five acres of wetlands with developed trails and boardwalks and a guide book available at the trail head sign in.

Touring Main Street in the Mohawk Valley
On the corner of Bleecker and AcademyStreets in East Utica is the historic
Utica Free Academy. Founded in the early 1800s, just after Old Fort Schuyler changed its name to the Village of Utica, the school is imbedded in the history of the community it served for 17 decades. You can learn more about the school in Malio Cardarelli's book, Cornerstone of Pride -History of Utica Free Academy
This historic Main Street, Oneonta is on the National Register of Historic Places because of the abundance and consistency of early 20th century architecture. Almost the entire downtown was rebuilt in the early 1900s after fire destroyed most of it. At the turn of the last century, Main Street was regularly interrupted by trains. According to city historian Mark Simonson, twelve passenger trains a day passed through Oneonta at one time.

Before we head off to visit another Main Street
in the Mohawk Valley, there are a few historical
sites we want to visit here in Oneonta. If you ever have a chance to take a walking tour of this city, do it. A peek inside the Fairchild Mansion will give you a glimpse into the past when emerging businesses and the railroad brought great wealth to the region.
Next week we visit a Main St. that is part of
Route 20 and home to one of NY State's Untiversities.

Known as the "Red Door Church." On the original site of the Walling Mansion and former site of Hartwick College Campus
Built in 1889, the Main Street Baptist Church has a grapevine motif throughout and an unusual stained glass window dedicated by those who built the church featuring tools of the trade in its design.
St. James Church has an incredible collection of original paintings and iconography.
Masonic Temple
The House that is now the Masonic Temple was built by David Yager in 1867. It was later the home of George W. Fairchild, a United States Congressman who was involved with International Business Machine Corporation in its early days. The house is the birthplace of his son, Sherman Fairchild, inventor of the Fairchild Aerial Camera. The Masons bought the house in 1929.
Alfresco's Italian Bistro
We found the biggest pizza we've ever seen at Alfresco's Italian Bistro just over the railroad tracks at the Southwest end of Main Street. The atmosphere is fun for the family in the former Oneonta Dairy building.

Textile artist, Sally Jones, designs, hand dyes, and prints silk fabric in her studio in Oneonta. All the elements that make up a pattern on cloth offer Sally a challenge as a designer and craftsperson. She is comfortable designing for fabrics because they are a necessary and familiar part of our daily experience.
