Ballroom Dancing with Gina & Luca
The Scene Weekly
We first came upon Van Hornesville a couple years ago when we met an artist to interview for the show. It's the kind of town you only come upon if you're going there. As we wound our way around the curve on Route 80, we were surprised to find an idyllic little hamlet open up to us. We visited on a sparkling winter wonderland of a day!

Feature Artist, Fraternal Composite Service
Since the 1950s Fraternal Composite Service has been pioneering photo composite technology right here in the Mohawk Valley. With over 50 employees and craftspeople in-house and over a dozen skilled photographers and service representatives travelling the countryside, this family-owned company continues to be the "best in the business."
A Walk Through the Village
We were given a personal tour by local historian and "Mayor," Ron Smith. To take a walk through the village click here. Van Hornesville was settled by Abram Van Horne in 1785. He was attracted to the power of the Otsquago Creek. The village has remained a peaceful country town due, in part, to one of its benefactors, Owen D. Young.
There was a grocery and liquor store operated by Abram Krill in the 1860s. It was legal in those days for individuals or businesses to issue their own paper currency.  The Krills are dated in "Van Hornesville, Herk.Co. N.Y. Oct. 25th 1869."
Abram Van Horne built a feed mill on this site in 1793. The present structure was built here in 1836 by Daniel Van Horne.
Owen D. Young, Businessman and Diplomat
Owen D. Young was born in 1874 in Van Hornesville. An 1894
graduate of St. Lawrence University, he completed the three-year
law course at Boston University in two years, graduating cum
laude in 1896. He became GE's president in 1922 and then in the
same year was appointed chairman, serving in that position until
1939. In 1919, at the request of the government, he created the
Radio Corporation of America (RCA) to combat threatened foreign
control of America's struggling radio industry. He became its
inaugural chairman and served in that position until 1929.
In the mid-1920s he helped found the National Broadcasting
Company (NBC) Young's participation in President Woodrow
Wilson's Second Industrial Conference following WWI
marked the
beginning of his counseling of five U.S. presidents. Young appeared on the cover of Time Magazine twice, once as Man of the Year in 1929. In 1932, he was a candidate for the Democratic Presidential  nomination which went to Franklin Roosevelt instead.
Owen D Young was Time Magazine's Man of the Year in 1929
Owen D. Young Benefactor and Farmer
Owen D. Young's love of country living got his family out of NYC often to spend time in Van Hornesville. After the little red school house burned down in 1925, Mr. Young built a new school that combined the area's rural schools. It became one of the very first centralized schools in New York State and was named after him after his death. He also provided 8.2 acres for a fish hatchery that will be preserved forever for that purpose.
Van Hornesville Fish Hatchery
The Van Hornesville Hatchery consists of 8.2 acres of land and two spring water sources. It was given to New York State as a gift by Owen D. Young. It was built with limestone left over from the building of the school. It has to be the prettiest locale for a fish hatchery and is open every day. Bring the family out for a picnic and watch the rainbow trout "boil up" when they are fed.
Owen D. Young Central School
The Owen D. Young School is a story in itself. It was one of the very first centralized schools. Its first graduating class was addressed by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Madame Curie designed the science lab and the library is a copy of George Washington.

Robert B. Woodruff Outdoor Learning Center
The Outdoor Learning Center consists of more than 50 acres in a natural setting in the gorge of the Otsquago Creek, adjacent to the school. It is on the site of an 18th century trail. George Washington was said to have used the trail in 1783 while on route to Cherry Valley.
Winter visitors can enjoy cross country skiing or snow-shoeing. The ice formations at the waterfalls offer some breathtaking photo opportunities.
Route 80 Bowl
Whether you're looking for a bite to eat or to knock down a few pins, the Route 80 Bowl is here for you. Every Saturday from 5-9pm is their famous $9 Smorgasborg($4.50 for 12 and under) The buffet includes roast beef, ham, chicken & biscuits and their "best in the state" rice pudding.
