We continue our spring tour of Cooperstown this week. We felt like we were in a Fairy Tale "Curds and Whey," "Little Bo' tique," and a magical carnival of flavors at Alex & Ika's restaurant with bowling alleys for tables! What fun Cooperstown is -even without its famous baseball heritage. If you have yet to take a Road Trip there this year, do it now before the summer crowds descend upon this "most perfect village."
Thanks for traveling with us,

Slow, Sweet Bread -an Italian Easter Tradition
At Caruso's
Cafe, Carmen
passes on his
knowledge
of making
breads and pastries the traditional Italian way. "Slow food" is becoming more and more popular in Europe and the U.S. as people begin to long for tradition. Italian Easter Bread (Casatiello) is braided sweet bread with eggs woven inside -a symbol of new life.

In the churchyard is the Cooper family plot. The most famous tomb is that of James Fenimore Cooper. A simple marble marker bears his name and dates of his birth and death. Also buried in the family plot is a freed slave who served Judge William Cooper.
William Cooper was born near Philidelphia in 1754, the son of British Quaker parents. In 1785 acquired a large tract of land in the vicinity of Otsego Lake. The area would be named Cooperstown in his honor.
Cheese and chutney are a match made in heaven. Chutney's also a wonderful accompaniment to pork, chicken, lamb, even venison. It's great with any meal you serve with rice or couscous, and perfect with curries. It makes a great sandwich spread, too. www.chutneyunlimited.com
You can't go wrong anything on the menu at Alex & Ika's. Alex's ingredients work together to create explosions of flavor in your mouth. Located right on Main St., but intimately tucked away from the busy activity of Cooperstown, it is a quiet oasis of
delightful dining.
Remember our first trip to Cooperstown?
In May of 2005, MV Living visited Cooperstown for the first time
and visited the historic
Tunnicliff Inn. That's
where we met Chef John.
We found out he's back,
so we stopped in to visit him.
He's still creating delicious dishes
and still painting, too.

Cooperstown was named for its founder, Judge William Cooper, James Fenimore's father.
In 1806, Judge Cooper set aside a tract of land for the construction of a church following these rites. Construction of the new church began in 1807. It was consecrated on July 8, 1810.
Christ Episcopal Church at 46 River St. will soon celebrate its 200th anniversary
Unlike painted stained glass windows, the color in Tiffany windows is inside the glass
The first window on the right as you enter the church is an authentic Tiffany. Louis Comfort Tiffany used opalescent glass in a variety of colors and textures to create a unique style of stained glass. This can be contrasted with the traditional method of painting on colorless glass.
James Fenimore is buried in the Cooper plot in the churchyard.
Cooperstown Cheese Company is located just South of Cooperstown at 107 Oxbow Rd in Milford. They create Northern Italian hard and semi-hard natural rind cheeses including Toma. All of the Toma brand cheeses use hormone free milk from Lester Tyler's Sunny Acres Farm.
