Happy Easter! We're back in Frankfort this week. It's been over 2 years since we last visited and we were happy to find new things -or at least new to us. From a traditional family bakery and historic post office to state-of-the-art manufacturing of fiber optics and parts for NASA's Mars Lander, Frankfort is an interesting little town!

A History of Manufacturing
Frankfort has a long history of manufacturing and innovation. In 1840, Frankfort was the chief industrial
center of the Mohawk Valley community. Whiskey
and gun powder were among its first manufacturing.
Many people remember Frankfort for hot air balloons
and matches. The first practical sulfur match made in
the U.S. came from Frankfort, from a factory founded by inventor, William Gates, shortly after the Civil War.
In 1840, Frankfort was the chief industrial center of the Mohawk Valley community. Almost exactly halfway between New York City and Buffalo, it was chosen as the site of the main shops of the West Shore Railroad in the 1880s.
In 1998, Fiberdyne Labs moved to a modern 22,000 square-foot building in the Frankfort Business Park. The company has 160 full time employees and 7 remote sales offices They manufacture state-of-the-art fiber-optic components including: splitters, attenuators, ethernet/ networking equipment and fiber optic and coaxial cable.
Since 1969 CTM Corporation has been as a leader in precision machining. Old world training, aided by state-of-the-art design and technology has taken the company far -to Mars in fact! This company produced parts for
NASA's Mars Lander, most of the "scoop" used for taking soil and ice samples of the planet's surface was manufactured right here in Frankfort.

Just try to walk by the Friendly Bake Shop on Main Street! This popular bakery is run by the Viti brothers. They are carrying on a long tradition of bakers in the family.
The Frankfort Post Office
The historic Frankfort Post Office is on the National Register. Inside you'll find a wood sculpture by American Modernist, Albert Wein. This 4 1/2 foot tall wood relief is titled, "Growth and was installed in 1942 as part of Roosevelt's WPA Program.

Saint Michael's Lancers: An Easter Tradition in Utica
For 111 years Holy Trinity Church has carried on a Holy Week tradition of guarding the tomb. The Saint Michael's Lancers march down the aisle of the church every 15 minutes to change guard from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. They are in bright red uniforms complete with helmet, gloves and sword.
Jeffrey Hardware on Bleecker St. in Utica is an East Utica landmark. Over the last century people have come here for everything from duct tape to steel doors. And for nearly that long, they have been waited on by Don Jeffrey. Mr. Jeffrey turns 90 this week, but has no plans of retiring anytime soon.
