We always enjoy mixing things up and exploring a street instead of our usual Road Trips to towns and villages. This week we learned about two historic streets: Bleecker and Broad Streets in Utica. They both begin at Genesee Street and head eastward running parallel to each other for over a mile. They dissect the historically and culturally dynamic East Utica.
Thanks for traveling with us,
Sharry and Lance

Two Historic Streets
The Sons of Italy
The culture and tradition of the early Italian immigrants is kept alive at the Sons of Italy, Utica Lodge No. 2054 on Bleecker Street. There are bingo games throughout the week and a fish fry on Fridays.
At the turn of the last Century, Broad Street was a manufacturing artery, pumping with industry and business. It was lined with giant mills employing thousands of immigrants during Utica's population boom of the late 1800s.

Bleecker Street was a shopping thoroughfare with bakeries, grocery stores, restaurants, barber shops and tailors. The air was filled with sounds and aromas from the predominantly Italian neighborhood.
Cafe Caruso
Carmen and Catherine Caruso opened Caruso's Cafe over 50 years ago. Today, Carmela Caruso carries on her parents' tradition of making authentic Italian pastries
