The
Scene
Weekly
with Mark Werchowski
From standardbreds last week to carousels and vaulting this week, we've certainly been around a lot of horses lately. At the Root Farm, they believe there is something truly magical in the relationship between humans and equines and we could feel it even in the short time we visited. Root Farm is just one of the many places to visit in Verona, Oneida County's largest town. We could definitely use more to to explore this area.
Thanks for traveling with us,
Sharry and Lance

Once Upon a Library, Part 2
The origins of a library in Utica date back to 1825 at the Broad St. offices of Attorney Justus Rathbone, know then as simply the Utica Library. In 1899, after several moves and a book collection and demand for services growing, a move to construct a new, permanent structure begins. Thomas R. & Frederick T. Proctor donate the land, and W.P. White gives $1,000 to start a building fund. The citizens
of Utica
approve a
bond issue
to finance
the project.
The Utica
Public Library
opened in
1904.

Rome Community Theater
The town of Verona is the largest town in Oneida County. It is bisected by the current Erie Canal and the Old Erie Canal. Many communities formed along the canal.
Canals, Cheese and Glass Factories
Much of the early economy of this region was based around agriculture, cheese production and the glass factories. The museum, located next to the town offices on Germany Road, is brimming with artifacts including "end of the day" glass, creative sculptures mill workers would make with the leftover glass at the close of the work day.
The glass factory workers lived in houses built by the factory owner. They were also paid, in part, by the factory's own money call shinplasters.
Freihofer's Bakery Outlet
Richard tries to use his shinplasters at the Freihofer's Bakery Outlet to no avail. He remembers when his parents drove for miles to save money on bread at the outlet. With grocery prices on the rise, it looks like the store is going to stay busy.
New Stores
Behind Freihofer's are two new businesses:

Joel's Front Yard Steak House
You can't miss the giant steer, Lucky, when you drive by Joel's Steak House. It was lucky for Lance Comfort's dad when a tractor trailer, carrying the giant statue, broke down in his parking lot years ago.
Verona First Presbyterian Church
The First Presbyterian Church of Verona celebrated its bicentennial in 2003. They had another reason to celebrate as well -they paid off their loan for their fellowship hall addition a year early.
The Root Farm offers both children and adults with special needs through adaptive vaulting -which encouraging non-verbal communication, reciprocal affection and personal growth.
Alice Root, carries on her grandfather, Elihu Root's, belief in the value of exposing children to farm life and animals.
Evan shows us his moves during his vaulting class.
