A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge
There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

There's a new restaurant in East Utica adding a new flavor to the great variety of cuisine this part of the city is known for. The Phou family treats you like family and serves up authentic South East Asian food especially Cambodian. The name of the restaurant is significant to his family. As the Lotus flower rises from the muddy waters, Mr. Phou's restaurant is a dream realized -a dream that began when his family fled to the United States from a war-torn Cambodia in the 1970's. Learn more about Cambodia in my "blog" at the top of the page.

A Visit to Tibbits Maple Products
Watch video
The Tibbits of Tibbits Road in New Hartford are producing maple syrup like the Tibbits before them. Five generations of Tibbits have been involved in maple production over the years from old fashioned tin buckets gathered by horse and wagon to the modern tubing and evaporators used today. The end product is the same -sweet, golden syrup!

Road Trip to Lyonsdale
The Lyon Family
The earliest pioneers to try to settle in the wilderness North of Boonville were the French fleeing the conflict of the revolution in France. The challenges of the rivers and the winter snows drove many of them away. In 1819 Lyondale was founded by Caleb Lyon and he built one of the first of many bridges to span the Moose and Black Rivers
Caleb Lyon, the founder of Lyonsdale, built the first of many bridges across the Moose and Black Rivers
Three-Way Bridge
The unusual three-way bridge in Lyons Falls was featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not." It was replaced by two separate bridges in the early 1960s.

The Gould Family
Gordias Gould helped build lock house on the Black River Canal. His son, GHP Gould, partnered with the Lyon heirs and eventually founded the prosperous Gould Paper Company. Built right on the falls, the Gould Paper Company employed most of the people in the village. It was the largest employer in  Northern New York and the Gould family built up one of the largest fortunes in New York State. They built a mansion that overlooked the mill. Today the former carriage house serves as the library.

Otis Technology
When Doreen Marks Garrett was 15, her hunting trip with her father was cut short when she didn't have the tools needed to clean her muddied gun. She developed a cleaning kit for herself, not realizing she was taking the first step toward a future company that would be a world leader in gun cleaning systems. Otis Technology employs over 150 people and projections call for $40 million in sales this year.
Otis Technology's small, portable gun cleaning kits are popular with sportsman and the military.

Landscape painter Robert Schneider embodies the rich tradition of the Hudson River School. Using a traditional academic style, he captures the always-changing landscape.
Susan Goetz grew up studying still life painting with her father Richard V. Goetz and figure painting and drawing with her mother, Edith Day Goetz. Today her canvasses combine her long-standing interest in still-life painting with an equally avid concern for portrait and figurative work.
