Goodyear Swamp Sanctuary

The Goodyear family donated some of their land on the shore of Otsego Lake to Glimmerglass Opera and also to SUNY Oneonta as a field station. The GoodYear Swamp Sanctuary is open to the public dawn to dusk. There are five acres of wetlands with developed trails and boardwalks and a guide book available at the trail head sign in.

A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge

There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

The MV Firebirds have been flying out of the Frankfort-Highland Airport for 40 years. The model airplane club meets regularly to build, train and fly radio-controlled aircraft. Their training nights are Tuesday evenings. The field is located on Gulf Rd. off of Albany Rd. From Utica: Take Albany St. south To Higby Rd., continue south on Albany Rd., turn left onto Gulf Rd. Airport will be on your left.

The canal was crucial to the development of Ilion and the region. Today it is a great recreational resource. The Ilion Marina is a great place to launch a boat or kayak or just have a picnic and watch the boats pass by.

Coy Cabin Dog Snacks

The entrepreneurial spirit is still alive in Ilion. Cozy Cabin Dog Snacks is a company run by the mother and son team, Vicki Ferrusi and Nathan Gazin. Their candy store grew into a business for both chocolate lovers and their pets. The organic dog biscuits and great for dogs with allergy problems.

Randy's Ridge Hobby Farm

Randy's Ridge Hobby Farm grew out of Richard and Susan Randazzo's love of animals. They invite people to visit their hobby farm which is home to horses, alpaca, chickens, ducks, geese, peacocks, cats, a miniature horse, and goats. Sundays are $1 horse rides day. You can also have a Barnyard Birthday party!
