A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge
There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

The Goodyear family donated some of their land on the shore of Otsego Lake to Glimmerglass Opera and also to SUNY Oneonta as a field station. The GoodYear Swamp Sanctuary is open to the public dawn to dusk. There are five acres of wetlands with developed trails and boardwalks and a guide book available at the trail head sign in.

On the corner of Bleecker and AcademyStreets in East Utica is the historic
Utica Free Academy. Founded in the early 1800s, just after Old Fort Schuyler changed its name to the Village of Utica, the school is imbedded in the history of the community it served for 17 decades. You can learn more about the school in Malio Cardarelli's book, Cornerstone of Pride -History of Utica Free Academy
This historic Main Street, Oneonta is on the National Register of Historic Places because of the abundance and consistency of early 20th century architecture. Almost the entire downtown was rebuilt in the early 1900s after fire destroyed most of it. At the turn of the last century, Main Street was regularly interrupted by trains. According to city historian Mark Simonson, twelve passenger trains a day passed through Oneonta at one time.
Our tour begins at 183 Main St., home of the Greater Oneonta Historical Society. Here you can pick up the book, Oneonta, Then & Now, to learn more about the history of the city. The museum here is open Open Saturdays 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Tuesdays noon to 3:00 PM. Take a walking tour of Main Street.

Stevens Hardware
Stevens Hardware is older than the city itself. The business was started in 1882 by T. Waldo Stevens. Today it is run by 3rd generation, John Stevens, who, at 91 years of age, is still keeping busy. He enjoys fishing and SU basketball. His hardware store has evolved to fit his personality, supplying the community with outdoor sporting goods.
Coffee Shops and Bookstores
Whether you like regular or decaf, new or used books, downtown Oneonta offers many places to warm up with a good book and espresso.
Artisans Guild
The Artisans Guild features the work of local and regional artists and craftspeople.
Main View Gallery and Studio
The Main View Gallery exhibits work by studio artists at The Arc Otsego's Center for Self Expression. Art-work, unique, hand-crafted items and other gift merchandise are available for sale year round.

Gail prefers to call herself a naturalist who paints rather than an artist because the study of nature has been a life-long passion. Gail has devoted the last five years to developing her unique style as an artist in the medium of egg tempera because it enables her to execute the most accurate representations of those things she loves, and to instill in them a sense of the Mystery, which she believes connects all living things.

We continue our tour of Main Street.
This week is Main St., Oneonta. This our 4th
show featuring Oneonta and we always forget how
much fun downtown is. It is filled with activity: people of all ages busy shopping, on their lunch break, visiting a gallery or bookstore. It sometimes seems like an island to us, far away from the Mohawk Valley, but it's less than an hour's drive (a scenic one at that) and always worth the trip!
