Episode #250 January 10, 2010

Welcome to our first new show of 2010. It always takes a little while to get back up to speed, but we always feel recharged after taking a couple weeks off. It's great to step back and look at the show and try to think of ways to improve it.
Thank you for continuing to tune in each week. Our latest Nielsen ratings were amazing and we are humbled by the number of people who make us a part of their Sunday morning. We will continue to do our best to bring you new, interesting shows each week.

A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge
Watch Video
There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

Part of Main Street, Little Falls is now one-way, but it wasn't always that way. Before urban renewal in the 1970s, Main Street was a two-way street and was once Route 5. In the late 1800s, Little Falls was known as the "cheese capitol of the world" and Main Street was most likely bustling with wagons filled with cheese headed to Europe and throughout the United States.
City Hall
The magnificent City Hall on Main St. in Little Falls was built with the help of a donation by the Burrells, a prominent family in the cheese-making business
Lovenhiem's
Lovenhiem's has been a part of Little Falls as long as anyone can remember. Since the late 1800s, this business has been serving the community. Some of the Old-timers remember looking through wallpaper when the company stored its samples in the old bank building that is now home to the Little Falls Historical Society.
Little Falls Public Library
There's plenty to do during the winter at the Little Falls Public Library. You can tour the beautiful China collection upstairs, look at the sparkling Little Falls diamonds on display, or take part in a virtual game of tennis or bowling with the new Wii game system. There are also movies every Tuesday afternoon at 1pm.
Benton Hall Academy
The stately Benton Hall Academy overlooking Main St. was built in 1895 and named in honor of Nathaniel Benton. Judge Benton's extensive career included public service as a New York State senator, a district attorney, a canal auditor, and a twelve year term as New York State Secretary of State. The building was saved from demolition, gutted and restored and now serves as the city's  grammar school.
Burrows Paper Corporation
Burrows Paper Corporation is the fourth largest light weight specialty paper and packaging producer on earth. The company was founded in Little Falls by Charles and Andrew Burrows in 1913.

Karen Barnes, a native of Upstate New York, has a BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University. During her senior year at SU she was recruited by Hallmark Cards, Inc. of Kansas City. Karen's commercial illustration includes work for National Geographic, Reader's Digest, Kid's Discover magazine and numerous publishers in NYC. Karen's love of pattern and color led her to faux and decorative painting. With her illustration background, she is particularly adept at faux finishes - the art of mimicking the look of a specific wood, stone, and marble.
