Cooperstown Meets
East Utica
We had a challenging week this week, trying to summarize the Holy Trinity Monastery. We had to remind ourselves of our show's mission: to encourage people to get out and experience the Mohawk Valley area for themselves. Hopefully we peaked your curiosity enough to get you out visiting your neighbors. Even just taking a Sunday drive through the breathtaking countryside of the region we get to call 'home.'
Thanks for traveling with us,
Sharry and Lance

100 years ago this summer, Theodore Roosevelt made a speech on the steps of the library during its dedication. This summer Jordanville will commemorate that event in celebration of the library's 100th anniversary. Also at the dedication in 1908 were Secretary of State, Elihu Root, and a young Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Cruger Mansion (Gelston Castle)
The Cruger Mansion, which is now in ruins, was built in 1836 by Harriet Douglas Cruger. It was built with stone from Little Falls and was inspired by Gelston Castle in Scotland. The property was passed to her niece, Fanny Robinson, who left it to her son Douglas Robinson. Douglas was married to Corrine Roosevelt, sister of Theodore Roosevelt. She is buried in cemetery on the property know as the Garden in the Woods.
Home to Russian Cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich
The world recently bid farewell to the great cellist, conductor and humanitarian MSTISLAV ROSTROPOVICH who passed away on April 27, 2007 in Moscow. Rostropovich was attracted to the beauty of the Gruger property and its proximity to the Russian Holy Trinity Monastery. He built a modern mansion on the estate in 1979. Currently the property is owned by Safflyn Corporation and there are big plans for the estate. Next month begins a series of monthly Jazz concerts. Call Mr. Safford at 347-426-4379 for information.
Holy Trinity Monastery is a male monastic community under the auspices of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Touring the monastery is quite an experience. How fortunate we are to be able to
take a "day trip to Russia!" Call friendly Father

Featured Artist, Tony D'Apice
At nearly 89 years of age, Tony D'Apice isn't slowing down much. He still works on his 5/8" scale models of historic buildings with detail, accuracy and precision. He calls his art "creative recycling" and as an historian he prefers telling the area's history through its buildings. You can see examples of his work at the New Hartford Historical Society and the Schuyler Town Offices. To see his personal collection call 797-7178.
