One of the great things about producing Mohawk Valley Living is that we not only learn so much about our local region, but also, because of our area's rich diversity, about the world as a whole.

This week we were honored to meet the Phou family at the new Lotus Garden restaurant. Mr. Phou fled Cambodia in the 1970s to escape a violent war. I have to admit that I didn't know much about Cambodia. By coincidence (or serendipity) the afternoon following our interview with Mr. Phou there was a special feature on the radio about a reporter touring the Mekong River in South East Asia. Today's installment? -Cambodia! Listen Here.

And if that coincidence wasn't strange enough, two days later, on our drive to see our son compete in intercollegiate dancesport, what was on the radio? -a story about the music of Cambodia in the 60's and 70's in the golden era before the war! Listen Here

A New Hike, Bike, and Ski Trail
in Old Forge
There's a new trail that takes you from the village of Old Forge (trail head just behind the school) to the McCauley Mountain Ski Area. This trail is for hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It takes you along an old tow path used by downhill skiers in the 1930s & 40s, before the McCauley Mountain was established. You can see some old downhill ski equipment along your hike, like an old truck that was retrofitting with a shive to tow skier up the hill so they could ski back into town. Die-hard skier would hike beyond the tow hill to McCauley, carrying their skis on their backs.

There's a new restaurant in East Utica adding a new flavor to the great variety of cuisine this part of the city is known for. The Phou family treats you like family and serves up authentic South East Asian food especially Cambodian. The name of the restaurant is significant to his family. As the Lotus flower rises from the muddy waters, Mr. Phou's restaurant is a dream realized -a dream that began when his family fled to the United States from a war-torn Cambodia in the 1970's. Learn more about Cambodia in my "blog" at the top of the page.

Road Trip to Unadilla Forks
Unadilla Forks was named for the meeting of the two branches of the Unadilla River. Unadilla is the Oneida Indian word for meeting place. The people who live here refer to the area as simply -"The Forks." The Unadilla River
attracted early settlers to the area and grist mills lined the shores. A dam was built to harness the river, creating a mill pond. In the 1970s, when the dam needed repairs, the Carparelli brothers donated the materials needed in memory of their father who enjoyed fishing the pond.
Architecture
Federal style architecture was popular during the late 1700s through the early 1800s. Unadilla Forks has more than its share of this style.
