Year Round Farmers Markets - A Growing Trend

Local farmers markets are becoming more popular every summer, but a new trend is growing - the year round market. I spoke with our friend, Jim Parker, of Ilion this week about his new four season Clapsaddle Farmers market. "The whole motivation was to make sure the local Amish community had a year round outlet to sell their goods and build stability so they would stay in the area," he said. Mr. Parker has been working closely with the Amish community for many years. He said there are around 3,000 Amish between the Ilion area and Amsterdam and they have put many old farms "back on the tax maps." The Clapsaddle Farm market has items from six different Amish churches (districts made up of a congregation of a few dozen Amish families living in a specific area). There are also items from local Mennonite families and the English as well. Items for sale include local produce, maple syrup, honey, jams and jellies, baked goods, furniture, baskets, and other seasonal items. Parker's Clapsaddle Farm is located in Ilion and is open Friday Noon-6pm and Saturday 10am-5pm Click here for info

Another relatively new year round market is the Westmoreland Winter Farmers Market open the first Saturday of the month 9am to noon, November-April at the Westmoreland Firehouse Station Road, Westmoreland. Link to localharvest.org

A long time local favorite is the Cooperstown Farmers' Market open 12 months a year. It is one of the only heated indoor markets in the area and features seasonal fruits and vegetable, local meats and fresh poultry, local eggs, cheese, yogurt, honey and maple syrup, home-baked sweets and treats, flowers and greenery, as well as handmade crafts and herbal lotions and lots more. It is open Saturdays 9am-2pm September through December. The Winter Market is open January through April with dates to be determined. Cooperstown Farmers Market
