Water, water everywhere. Every spring, the winter snows melt and rush through the little village of Lyons Falls. You don't have to be a whitewater kayaker to experience the thrill of the raging waters of the Moose and Black Rivers, just take a drive to Lyonsdale, it's less than an hour north of Utica on Route 12.

Taking East Utica for granted
When we visited Napoli's this week we ran into a couple gentlemen with boxes stacked high with tomato pie. They looked like they were making a delivery, but, in fact, they were from Connecticut making their annual run for this East Utica specialty. They told us it's impossible to find real tomato pie, even in New York City.

The earliest pioneers to try to settle in the wilderness North of Boonville were the French fleeing the conflict of the revolution in France. The challenges of the rivers and the winter snows drove many of them away. In 1819 Lyondale was founded by Caleb Lyon and he built one of the first of many bridges to span the Moose and Black Rivers.
Caleb Lyon, the founder of Lyonsdale, built the first of many bridges across the Moose and Black Rivers
The history of Lyonsdale and many beautiful photographs and postcards can be found HERE
The unusual three-way bridge in Lyons Falls was featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not." It was replaced by two separate bridges in the early 1960s.
Gordias Gould helped build lock house on the Black River Canal. His son, GHP Gould, partnered with the Lyon heirs and eventually founded the prosperous
Gould Paper Company.
Built right on the falls, the Gould Paper Company employed most of the people in the village. It was the largest employer in
Northern New York and the Gould family built up one of the largest fortunes in New York State. They built a mansion that overlooked the mill. Today the former carriage house serves as the library.
Tony Zenzillo is continuing the family's business that his grand- father started over 50 years ago.
When Doreen Marks Garrett was 15, her hunting trip with her father was cut short when she didn't have the tools needed to clean her muddied gun. She developed a cleaning kit for herself, not realizing she was taking the first step toward a future company that would be a world leader in gun cleaning systems. Otis Technology employs over 150 people and projections call for $40 million in sales this year.
Otis Technology's small, portable gun cleaning kits are popular with sportsman and the military.
Josephine Ambrose is comfortable with both watercolors and oils. She teaches classes at the Parkway Senior Center in Utica. You can see some of her beautiful portraits at Alterra Villas of Sherman Brook in Clinton.
